RahXephon

RahXephon (ラーゼフォン Rāzefon?) is a popular Japanese science fiction series about 17-year-old Ayato Kamina, his ability to control a godlike mecha known as the RahXephon, and his inner journey to find a place in the world around him. His peaceful life as a student and artist in Tokyo is suddenly interrupted by a mysterious woman who appears to be stalking him, strange machines invading the city, and even stranger machines fighting back.

The original 26-episode anime television series was the first directed by Yutaka Izubuchi. It was created by Izubuchi and Bones, and it aired on Fuji TV from January to September 2002. It was produced by Fuji TV, Bones, Media Factory and Victor Entertainment. The series received critical acclaim and was subsequently translated, released on DVD and aired in several other countries, including the United States. An adapted movie directed by Tomoki Kyoda, with plot changes and a few new scenes, was released in 2003. Novels, an extra OVA episode, an audio drama, computer games, illustration books, and a somewhat tweaked manga adaptation by Takeaki Momose were also created.

Music, time, mystery, intrigues and romance are central elements of RahXephon's plot. The series shows clear influences from philosophy and Japanese folklore, and from Western literature such as the work of James Churchward. Mesoamerican and other Pre-Columbian civilizations have a prominent place in the cultural background of the series.

Background

The backdrop of RahXephon is the fight against pan-dimensional invaders known as the Mulians, or Mu (IPA pronunciation: [muː] Katakana: ムウ). In appearance, the Mu are indistinguishable from humans. However, they carry a genetic marker called the "Mu phase" which makes their blood turn blue at a point in their maturity; this process also appears to cause memory loss.

Although RahXephon is usually placed in the mecha genre of anime, its "mechas" are not fully mechanical. The mechas used by the Mu are called Dolems. Dolems are made of clay, like golems; each is bound to a Mulian, and some are also bound to a human host called a "sub-Mulian".

The overarching theme of RahXephon is one of music changing the world. The Dolems are animated by a quasi-mystical force that is connected to music; most of the controlling Mulians appear to be singing. A Dolem attacks while singing, and sometimes the attack is the song itself. The RahXephon can also attack by having its pilot — the "instrumentalist" — sing a note. This unleashes powerful forces (such as light-energy blasts or heat waves) that cause destruction on an apocalyptic scale. Each of the Mulian Dolems has an Italian name which references musical notation, such as Allegretto, Falsetto, or Vivace. The ultimate goal of the RahXephon is to "tune the world." Izubuchi says the name RahXephon lacked a real meaning, but that he now explains it as composed of Rah, which according to Churchward is the origin of Ra, X for the X factor (the unknown), and -ephon as a suffix for instrument (-phone).

Central plot

The unusual relationship between Ayato Kamina and Haruka Shitow is one of the most important plot lines of the series. Although Haruka appears to be a stranger to Ayato at first, the series reveals that Haruka and Ayato know each other from before the beginning of the story.

Ayato, a boy conceived with the help of the Bähbem Foundation, was living in Tokyo with his adoptive mother, Maya Kamina. Ayato met Haruka on a trip outside Tokyo, and they continued seeing each other when they returned to school in Tokyo. At this time, Haruka's family name was Mishima.

The story reveals that two floating cities appeared above Tokyo and Sendai around the beginning of 2013. The ensuing conflict escalated into nuclear warfare, and the Mu enveloped Tokyo and outlying suburbs within a spherical barrier resembling Jupiter, referred to as "Tokyo Jupiter" ("Tōkyō Jupita") by all those outside. The barrier has a dilatory effect on time, with time inside Tokyo Jupiter passing about one-sixth as fast as the outside time.

During the Tokyo Jupiter incident, Haruka Mishima and her pregnant mother were away on a holiday trip while Ayato was caught inside. Years after the incident, Haruka's mother re-married and their family name became Shitow. Maya modified Ayato's memories to make him forget Haruka. The series makes clear that the entire population of Tokyo Jupiter is subject to the same kind of mental control. Still, visions of Haruka continue to haunt Ayato, as manifested in his art. Ixtli, RahXephon's soul, also adopts Haruka's appearance and family name (Mishima) but takes a different given name, Reika.

The story begins as the seemingly peaceful city is attacked by invaders while a mysterious woman (soon revealed to be Haruka) stalks Ayato. By this point, time dilation has made Haruka considerably older than Ayato and his friends who remained inside. Because of this, Ayato does not recognize Haruka and initially mistrusts her, but he gradually re-discovers his love for her as the series progresses and he learns of what has happened. At the end of the series, Ayato's RahXephon merges with Quon's, and he "re-tunes the world" (that is, modifies the past) so that he and Haruka would not have been separated. In the final sequence of the series, the adult Ayato (who can now easily be mistaken for Dr. Kisaragi, his twin brother) is seen with his wife Haruka and their infant daughter Quon.

My inspiration: the most significant of this anime series is the character design which i like the most. The story line is also interesting. The plot focus on psychology and love romance. this anime also reflex many cultural and civilization: "RahXephon has many references to Pre-Columbian American culture. December 21, 2012 is the end of the 5-vigesimal Mayan Long Count calendar and the transition from one Mayan age into the next. In RahXephon the Mu re-appear one week after this date. Characters listen to a song called "Fate of Katun"; a Katun is a measurement of time in the Mayan Calendar. The Dolem control system is worn as a helmet shaped like a face from a Mayan sculpture,[21] and the cities of the Mu contain artwork inspired by Mayan and other Mesoamerican art.[22] Even the leader of the Mu in Tokyo is named Maya." Crest of the Stars (TV)

Crest of the Stars (Japanese: 星界の紋章 Seikai no Monshō) is a trilogy of space opera (some parts could classify as military science fiction/military space opera) science fiction novels written by Hiroyuki Morioka. Beginning in 1999, the novels were adapted into anime series, the first of which ran for 13 episodes on WOWOW. The initial trilogy was followed by a second, ongoing novels series, Banner of the Stars (currently 4 volumes, aka Seikai no Senki), which was adapted into three sequel series to the anime -- Banner of the Stars (13 episodes, aka Seikai no Senki), Banner of the Stars II (10 episodes, aka Seikai no Senki II) and both adapting the second novel, two recap movies -- Crest of the Stars Special Edition and Banner of the Stars Special Edition, and an OVA Crest of the Stars Lost Chapter (aka Seikai no Danshō). The fourth anime series, adapting the third novel, Banner of the Stars III (aka Seikai no Senki III) is an OVA released in Japan in 2005.

Plot

Crest of the Stars and Banner of the Stars (series I and II) follow Ghintec Linn (aka Jinto Lynn), a young prince whose world is taken over by the space-dwelling race of the Abh. When Ghintec was a young boy, his father, Rock Lynn, under threat of invasion, handed over their world, Martine, to the Abh in exchange for a position within Abh society. Young Ghintec is sent off to school to learn the ways of Abh nobility and the story of Crest of the Stars picks up as he meets the young Abh princess, Lamhirh (aka Lafiel) as they are about to travel to military school for Ghintec's further training.

However, in the midst of their travels, Lamhirh and Ghintec (along with the Abh ship Gothlauth, aka Gosroth) find themselves at the very beginnings of a war between the Abh Empire and the Four Nations Alliance of humankind - an anti-Abh alliance of the democratic nations of the United Mankind, the Federation of Hania, the Republic of Greater Alcont, and the People's Sovereign Union of Planets - a conflict with strong overtones of the Peloponnesian War between Sparta and Athens.

The series -- both the anime and novels -- are particularly notable for the fact that Morioka created for them an entire language, Baronh (and an accompanying alphabet, Ath), which the Abh speak, read, and write. Almost all written text in the anime is in Baronh, with occasional text in other (invented) languages; at least one planet is shown to have adopted Ath to write their own language (although this is not a plot point, and easily missed).

Crest of the Stars was released in Japan in 1999 and in the United States by Bandai in 2001. At the end of 2002, TechTV announced that Crest of the Stars was to be one of the initial titles as part of their new Anime Unleashed programming and began broadcast at the end of 2002 and through 2003.

Characters

The main protagonists of Seikai series of novels and anime are Ghintec (Jinto), a genetically "Terran" Abh nobleman, and Lamhirh (Lafiel), a princess of the empire. The story generally revolves around their evolving relationship. Other characters also give color to the story, the importance of whom underscore the rather difficult and extraordinary circumstances the relationship of the two main characters have to develop under. There of course is their fellow bridge crew on the attack ship Basroil- Sobach, Aicryac, and Samsonn. From the empress on the top to the lowly "grounder" subject, from the Commander-in-Chief of the Rüé Spainec (Imperial Armed Forces) to the ordinary fectodaic (Wing Flyer), from the ambassadors of foreign states to their forces in the battlefield, the characters of the Seikai series give depth to its story.

My inspiration:
This anime does not contain great visual as well as heroic action as usually seen in a shounen (anime and manga primarily intended for boys) anime. However, the content still appeals me through its elegant story line. The most attraction in this anime to me is the focus on psychology area in which the character of each character is expressed deeply following the development of the story. This is a recommendation to anyone who interested in anime which has something to thing about after seeing it.

Appleseed (film)

アップルシ-ド Appurushîdo) is a film released in 2004 by Geneon. It is based on the characters created by Masamune Shirow in the original Appleseed manga series that was published in 1985. Although it shares some characters with the original series, this film's storyline is not connected to it.

Plot outline

Set in 2131 AD, Deunan Knute, a young legendary female soldier is a survivor of the Third World War which has brought Earth to the brink of destruction. Alongside her former lover and comrade Briareos, who is now a cyborg, Deunan is brought to a Utopian city called Olympus, also inhabited by a genetically-engineered species called Bioroids. There, she integrates into the prestigious ESWAT organization to serve as the city's guardian. But what she discovers is not the promised land of peace, but rather a deadlier, more elusive battlefield than before.

Bioroids have a lifespan much shorter than those of humans, due to the suppression of their reproductive capabilities. When the fluid that is used in Bioroid life extension processes is destroyed by the Olympus Regular Army in a terrorist attack as part of its demonstration of fear and hatred for the Bioroids, a crisis which requires immediate resolution is formed, and the Appleseed data is revealed to still exist, even though most thought it destroyed.

Under the surface, as we can see, Olympus is plagued by conflicting factions. Some believe that Bioroids are a threat to the future advancement of mankind, whilst others believe that humans themselves are the threat. The ultimate question is over everyone's right to life, and whether or not one group deserves life more than the other. At the centre of this battle is Appleseed, the data that is able to extend Bioroid life, by restoring reproductive functions.

Characters

Deunan Knute

The daughter of Carl and Dr. Gilliam Knute, Deunan, who is considered as a beautiful and highly skilled warrior, has spent almost her entire life fighting in a war that was, for the most part, over. It was not until she was rescued by an ES.W.A.T. (Extra Special Weapons And Tactics) team, led by Hitomi and her former lover Briareos, in the middle of a ruined city just after Deunan had a short but fierce battle with unidentified enemies, that she was finally evacuated from the Badlands. When she arrived in Olympus, the change of environment was severe, but it was a greater shock to her when she found that Briareos had lost over 75% of his original body during the last Global War and was now a cyborg.

The day after she was brought to the city of Olympus, Deunan learned that over half of the population of the city was composed of artificial humans called Bioroids and that her new friend, Hitomi, was one herself. Deunan also discovers that other people are looking for her, mostly because she possesses, without knowing it, the secret of "Appleseed". That interest will become extremely important when Hitomi's life will be at risk and the "Appleseed Data" will be needed to save her and the entire Bioroid population of Olympus. But the discovery of the "Appleseed Data" could condemn the human population to extinction without Deunan knowing about this detail. But that would mean defying the powerful Olympus Regular Army (O.R.A.), composed entirely of humans and under the command of General Edward Uranus III and Colonel Hades.

Briareos Hecatonchires

At one time, Briareos was Deunan Knute's lover, as well as a comrade-in-arms in battle. During two years of hard separation for both of them, he was severely injured on the North African front. When Hitomi and the Elders saved him, he had over seventy-five percent of his body replaced by state-of-the-art mechanical components, making him a highly advanced cyborg. During Deunan's stay in Olympus he is assigned by his ES.W.A.T. superiors to protect her and also begins to search for the "Appleseed Data." In the original story, Briareos was a white man who lived in the mediterranean who served under Colonel Carl Knute, Deunan's father. In the original manga, Briareos and Deunan are not separated, and she is well aware of his cyborg body replacement.

Voiced by: Jūrōta Kosugi (Japanese), Jamieson Price (English)

Athena Areios

Prime Minister of Olympus, Athena Areios is a first-generation Bioroid created by Deunan's mother, Dr. Gilliam Knute, and served as her lab assistant until Dr. Knute's death. Because Athena is a first-generation Bioroid, she doesn't have the emotional limitations the second-generation has, so she has greater latitude to use "extraordinary" methods to try to find Deunan. Of course, she also runs the risk that either the Council of Elders or General Uranus would find out and take action against her, so she, along with her chief-of staff Nike, have to be very careful.

Voiced by: Mami Koyama (Japanese), Mary Elizabeth McGlynn (English)

Nike

Nike is Athena Areios's chief-of-staff, as well as being commander-in-chief of ES.W.A.T. Although she is a second-generation Bioroid, and being such having her emotions controlled, she is fiercely loyal to Athena, not to mention the Bioroids' prime purpose: the salvation of humanity.

Voiced by: Miho Yamada (Japanese), Mimi Woods (English)

Hitomi

A second-generation Bioroid, Hitomi is charged with recruiting new members of ES.W.A.T.. She had led the rescue mission of Deunan Knute in the Badlands, as well as aiding her getting settled in Olympus. Although her emotions are regulated, she has interest in the emotion of love, and is disturbed by hate, as expressed by the human soldiers of the O.R.A, especially towards the Bioroids.

Voiced by: Yuki Matsuoka (Japanese), Sandy Fox (English)

Yoshitsune Miyamoto

Also a second-generation Bioroid, Yoshitsuni Miyamoto... or "Yoshi" as he is referred to, is ES.W.A.T.'s chief mechanic and Land Strider designer. He also would like to further examine Briareos' cybernetic armor more closely, if Briareos would allow it. His knowledge of mechanical workings would become useful later in the film.

Voiced by: Toshiyuki Morikawa (Japanese), Dave Wittenberg (English)

Edward Uranus III

Supreme commander of the O.R.A., General Edward Uranus III has a great distrust of the Bioroids, and wishes to either control them or totally eliminate them. But unlike his subordinate Hades, he is not given to irrationality. A friend of the Knute family, Uranus deeply regrets the death of Dr. Gilliam Knute and wants to persuade Deunan to help him in his quest.

Voiced by: Yuzuru Fujimoto (Japanese), Michael McConnohie (English)

Hades

Colonel Hades is Gen. Uranus's subordinate. Like Uranus, he has a great distrust of the Bioroids. However, his distrust has evolved into an irrational, all-consuming hatred, and wishes to see the Bioroids destroyed.

Originally, Hades served under Carl Knute, Deunan's father, in Los Angeles' S.W.A.T., but was thrown out by Carl because of his extreme methods. He held a grudge with Carl, and is furious that Carl's D.N.A. is in all the Bioroids.

In the end, he is killed by Deuan's pistol, which was her father's.

Voiced by: Takehito Koyasu (Japanese), Jack Aubree (English)

My inspiration:
Even though the plot of this movie isn't follow the original manga, the plot is some how interesting when the director successfully appeal the audience in creating such a futuristic world. In this world, people don't want anymore war and tried to control their emotion in order to prevent another war. The movie represent the most desire of people: to live in peace. The Visual of the movie is significant with the imitation of objects such as people and machine as well as physical interaction such as a bomb goes off or the bullet interact with the wall.

Eden: It's an Endless World! is a manga by Hiroki Endo (遠藤浩輝), published monthly in the magazine Afternoon. Eden is set in the near future, following a pandemic which killed 15 percent of the world's population, crippled or disfigured many more, and upset the world's political balance greatly.

Eden is to some extent based on Gnostic mythology, with few characters being named after Gnostic characters, but the range of this influence is difficult to determine.

Plot

Spoiler warning: Plot and/or ending details follow.

The series begins with Ennoea and Hana living a peaceful life on a remote island called Eden, with researcher Lane Morris, who is their guardian, a victim of the pandemic, and a homosexual. The events that led to this situation are revealed in flashbacks, leading up to the return of Ennoea's father, along with the forces of the Propater.

Later on the series focuses on Ennoea's son, Elijah, and his conflict with the Propater.

Characters

Elijah Ballard – The main protagonist, Elijah is introduced on the run from the Propater. He encounters some mercenaries also eluding the Propater and is forced to join them. During his flight he is forced to become a hardened killer.

Ennoea Ballard – Elijah's father, raised on Eden. After he and Hana left there, Ennoea became the most powerful drug lord in South America, and a staunch opponent of the Propater

Hana Mayor – Elijah's mother, raised on Eden. She and Elijah's sister were captured by the Propater while trying to leave Ennoea with Elijah. A major focus of the series is Elijah's quest to rescue his family.

Colonel Khan – The Colonel is an old soldier from Azerbaijan, and the leader of the Nomad group (including Kenji and Sophia) fleeing the Propater at the start of the series. Khan became Kenji's mentor after killing his brother.

Sophia – A powerful Greek computer hacker, and full-body cyborg. Sophia has the appearance of a young girl, but is probably around 50 - 60 years old. Sophia is sort of a mother figure to many characters in the series, most notably Kenji, although her relationship with him is a little more complicated. Sophia was very promiscuous in her youth, and had six children. Her first, whom she tried to kill, and who still bears the scars, is a high ranking member of Nomad. Her last was killed in their flight from Propater, and with his corpse was hidden the disc containing Maya. Sophia later helps to activate Maya.

Maya – An almost godlike AI, which seems to roughly correspond to the savior of Gnostic mythology.

Kenji – The brother of a low-level Yakuza boss, Kenji is extremely skilled at hand-to-hand combat. Kenji is even able to go hand-to-hand with the Aeons. While he initially appears to be a sociopath, killing both soldiers and non-combatants without any signs of remorse, flashbacks in the forth volume show him to be a psychologically complex character who is driven by basic human needs such as love and meaning.

Cherubim – A sophisticated robot built to protect the research facility on Eden, who was later used to destroy it. Cherubim later serves as Elijah's protector, and is a powerful combatant in his conflicts with the Propater. However, Cherubim is not always able to distinguish friend from foe, and often causes collateral damage. Cherubim is named after a type of angel.

Aeons – Named after a sort of second-order deity in Gnostic mythology, the Aeons are nearly invincible, virtually immortal super-soldiers, designed by the Propater and used by them fairly frequently. The Aeons have arms which are segmented and extensible, and are armed with sharp claws. They will flail them around like whips, and they can also shoot their claws as projectiles. They can be killed, but will not die naturally. They do not seem to have much intelligence of their own. Some high-level Propater agents are also equipped with similar bodies to those of the Aeons.

The Propater – A supranational organization which grew within NATO and the UN, and eventually took them over. The Propater controls much of the world, including Japan, the USA, much of Europe and South America, and its territory is known as "Gnostia." Territory outside the Propater's control is called "Agnostia," and includes most of the Islamic world, and Peru, among other areas. The name Propater is taken from the Latin name of the God the Father in the Holy Trinity and the symbol of the organization, seen on the armor of its military forces, is a cross with a snake wrapped around it.

NOMAD – An international mercenary organization which apparently has goals of its own, which run counter to the Propater. It includes Kenji, Sophia, Khan, and it aids Elijah on several occasions.

My inspiration:
As the plot summary, this manga reflex a lot to the story in Holy Bible. however, to me, the later part of this manga remind me of the novel The Godfather with many setting related to underground dealing. The content and the drawing is so good make this is a must read manga.

Neon Genesis Evangelion (TV)

Age rating: Teenagers (May contain bloody violence, bad language, nudity)
Genres: Drama, Mecha, Military, Psychological, Science fiction, Shounen

Plot Summary: At the age of 14 Shinji Ikari is summoned by his father to the city of Neo Tokyo-3 after several years of separation. There he unwillingly accepts the task of becoming the pilot of a giant biological humanoid by the name EVA01 and protect the world from the enigmatic invaders known as angels. Even though he repeatedly questions why he has accepted this mission from his estranged and cold father, his doing so helps him to gradually accept himself. But why exactly are the angels attacking and what are his father’s true intentions.
Sources:http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/encyclopedia/anime.php?id=49

Plot

Evangelion's plot superficially revolves around the struggles by the paramilitary organization NERV to prevent the city of Tokyo-3 and the Geofront underneath it from being destroyed by monstrous beings called Angels. To this end, NERV enlists three teenagers, Shinji Ikari (the son of NERV's commander Gendo Ikari), Rei Ayanami, and Asuka Langley Soryu, to pilot enormous mecha called Evangelions into battle against the Angels. As the series progresses, it is revealed that the true purpose of NERV, the Evas, and the Angels is to bring about a forced evolution of humanity with potentially cataclysmic repercussions. The struggles of the central characters to overcome their personal issues and personality conflicts factor heavily into the events of the series, and become integral to its conclusion. Towards the end, psychological issues predominate and the apocalyptic events in the real world are only alluded to "over a montage of bleak visuals, that include black and white photos of desolate urban motifs such as a riderless bicycle or vacant park benches interspersed with graphic stills of the devastated NERV headquarters in which Shinji's colleagues are seen as bloodstained bodies."[12]

The final two episodes were possibly the most controversial segments of a controversial series,[13] although Anno defended the artistic integrity of the finale[14].

Characters

The characters of Evangelion are continuously struggling with their interpersonal relationships, their inner demons, and traumatic events in their pasts, creating a complex pattern of relationships.

The main characters of Neon Genesis Evangelion
The main characters of Neon Genesis Evangelion

Anno described the hero, Shinji Ikari, as a boy who "shrinks from human contact," and has "convinced himself that he is a completely unnecessary person, so much so that he cannot even commit suicide." He describes Shinji and Misato Katsuragi as "extremely afraid of being hurt" and "unsuitable — lacking the positive attitude — for what people call heroes of an adventure;[8] as compared to a typical hero of anime, Shinji is characterized more by lack of energy and emotional affect than any sort of heroism or bravery[15] Rei Ayanami and Asuka Langley Soryu, the other major protagonists, have similar flaws and difficulty relating to other people.

According to Anno, Evangelion was an attempt to make all perspectives into one, creating characters that represent different things to different viewers to make it impossible for everyone to arrive at a single theory. To some viewers, the characters are psychological representations, while to others, they are philosophical, religious or even historical.[16] It seems the main goal was to present characters who reflected the deep depression and eventual recovery that Anno experienced before beginning work on Evangelion.[8][17] Assistant Director Kazuya Tsurumaki said of the series, "If a person who can already live and communicate normally watches it, they won't learn anything."[18]

The character designs by Yoshiyuki Sadamoto have also contributed to the popularity of Evangelion. The attractive designs of the three main female leads, Asuka, Rei and Misato, led to extremely high sales of merchandise[19] (especially of Rei, the "Premium Girl"[20]), and they have been immortalized in the dōjinshi community,[21] garage kit models, and in subsequent anime (such as Burst Angel)

My inspiration:

This is a great anime both in its plot and meaning. The anime reflex story in Bible and considers heavily on psychology. Even the name of this anime reflex its content which is the most attraction to me: Evangelion = Eva (The first woman in the world) + Angel ( represent for happiness and purity) + Lion (Brave and proud). In my opinion. This is a must see anime for everyone who research or interested in anime
